OPEN WATER ABOUNDS!!!!

Greetings All:
Well, with this warmer than normal weather continuing, the old Mississippi River has opened up nicely. There is a lot of available open water to fish at the present time and the fish are there. With all the open water, anglers are able to travel down river to some of the great areas where fish are currently holding. I was down river this morning checking out a few early Spring Hot spots and found the action excellent. In just two hours, boated and released over 20 nice keeper walleye and sauger. All fish were returned safely to the river to fight again. As far as tackle?, I just uses 3" plastic shad bodies tipped on a jig. With water conditions, a 1/4th ounce jig was just the ticket. Cast your offering to in water structure and use a slow, steady retrieve. Fish did not want a fast return. Slow is the way to go.
You might want to start thinking about getting that boat out of mothballs and getting ready for some "Early" Spring fishing on the old Mississippi.

Good Luck and Save A Few For Me!!!

ICE TURNING DANGEROUS!!!

Greetings All:
Just a quick note to let all you folks know that the ice in the area has become quite iffy. What looks to be good us has been deterioating from underneath and melting from the top also. What might have been good safe ice yesterday might be dangerous today. Use a lot of caution if venturing out.

Weather forecast calling for rain on Wednesday which will make conditions even more dangerous.

Remember, ALWAYS wear that PFD when heading out. It just might safe your life!!!

Be safe out there and enjoy the Great Outdoors!!!!

OPEN WATER MORE COMMON DAY BY DAY!!!

Greetings All:

Well, with the mild weather we have be experiencing lately the Mississippi River is once again open quite a way down from the dams. This makes fishing those great down river spots easy once again. Lots of nice fish down river on wing dams and also sharp tapering rocky shorelines. Cast jig/minnow rigs to shore and work back into deeper water. Use a nice slow retrieve for best results.

Was out this morning and caught a very nice limit of big, chunky sauger using this method. Water in great shape right now. If you get a chance to get out, GO!!!

Finally, make sure you use nice big minnows in the 3" range and keep them lively. Fish not hitting a dead or dying minnow.

Good Luck and Enjoy the River.

Good Ice Finally Happening!!!

Greetings All:

Well, finally some safe ice to fish on. After the unusually mild weather we can now get onto the ice and stare through the holes waiting for a fish to bite.  One thing to remember, the fish are in their late Winter habitat and you have to fish them as such.  Very soon they will start moving into the late Winter mode so be sure to adjust where you fish.   Action in the river backwaters is fair to good. Mostly a crappie bite and also some really nice Northern available.

After today's heavy 8" snow storm, be extra careful walking on that ice. Bring a spud pole to feel ice in front of you as you are walking. Remember snow acts as insulation on the ice and will cover bad spots. Be alert when walking.

GREAT JANUARY WEATHER CONTINUES!!!

Greetings All:
Well, here we are one full week into the new year and the great weather continues to bless us. No snow on the ground and I sure hope it stays that way. Although we could use some moisture to get the water levels up in the Mississippi River, I'll wait for those warm Spring rains to do the job.

As far as the fishing? Lot's of open water to navigate on the river and lot's of nice fish available. I have been doing my angling way down river from the dam's and have been having excellent results. Personally I do not like to play "Bumper Boats" up at the dam. Plus, lot's of small non-keeper fish up there also.
Down river, wingdams and river bends along with steep tapering banks are holding nice walleye and sauger. You may have to try a few different spots but when fish are located you will catch a bunch. Standard jig/minnow rigs working best with bright colored jigs.

In closing, looks like the great weather will continue at least through the upcoming week. Hope you get a chance to get out on the Mississippi to enjoy some wonderful  January angling.
