MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND IS UPON US!!

Greetings All:
Well, Memorial Day Weekend is upon us for 2012. This is the unofficial start of the Summer season. For you folks planing on getting out on the Mississippi River it looks like there may be some spotty showers in the forecast and some near record high temperatures also on tap. Forecasters are saying that Sundays temps could top the 94 degree mark,,,Whew, That's Hot!!!

Make sure if your outside enjoying the great outdoors that you stay very well hydrated and drink a lot of water. Remember, any alcohol will add to your dehydration. Although it may taste good, it is not a good idea in the very hot weather. Also bring the sunscreen and bug spray to stay protected.

The river is in great shape, a little on the low side but nice. Be careful out there and wear those life jackets. I want everyone to get back home safely.

Finally,  let’s all remember to take a moment to think about those who make it possible for our freedoms. This is a great time to fly your flags to show our support for those who serve and their families who wait for them.
Happy Memorial Day!

DON'T LET THE HIGHER WATERS SLOW YOU DOWN!!

Greetings All:
Some of the rain run-off from up North has finally made its way down into the Tri-States area. The gates on the dams in both Dubuque and also Bellevue are open at this time.

This is only a small bump in the fishing road so don't let it ruin your trip. In fact, the fresh water has re-energized some of the backwaters and the fish are biting well. Catfish especially good on dip baits. Look for crappie and blugills also hungry. On the main river, wingdams giving up a multitude of different fish. My favorite during May is the Big Stripers that I have been getting on the river.

Look for the action to continue with this great streak of weather we are having.

MUDDY WATERS HAVE ARRIVED!!!

Greetings All:
Well, I predicted it was coming and it has arrived. Muddy water that is. The recent heavy rains up North have finally started making their way down river and the muddy water has arrived also. Visibilities as of this morning were not very good. Less than 2 to 3" using a bright orange jig to test.

These current conditions will hopefully be just a temporary thing. The strong winds are also contributing to the mixing of the water also causing bad visibilities.

Look for catfish action to stay fairly good since they have a very keen sense of smell and can find that "Dipbait" your using. You can search out some of the backwater areas and look for the cleanest water you can find to fish.

Keep checking back here for updates on the river conditions.

CATFISH ACTION BUILDING!!!

Greetings All:

Well, with this hot, humid weather upon us this weekend, the catfish have responded well. Was out this morning in some of my favorite Mississippi River backwaters and the action was awesome.

Look for the deepest water available in the backwaters that have some dead-falls or downed structure laying in the water. Fish the upstream side and use some good old "Stinkbait". The water is warm enough now and the scent of the bait is traveling well in the water and getting Mr. Whiskers attention. If you do not get a bite in 15 minutes, try another spot. When you locate a good hole, you will catch multiple fish from it. G & S Cheesebait has been my favorite for many years and continues to work well. Just remember to bring some rags to clean up with because I am sure your Wife or Girlfriend will not like the way you smell if you don't wash it off. LOL. Not a way to start a romantic evening!!!

Get out and get a mess of these very nice catfish on the old Mississippi. Tonight, it's deep fried catfish fillets for this guy. But don't worry, I'll eat a few for you also!!!!

Take care and enjoy the fishing.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK!!

Greetings All:
Well, these very strong storms that have been popping from the heat have caused some very heavy rains in the area. Areas in Pool 14 from Clinton, IA South have had heavy rains which will muddy the river up. Further North in Pools 10-11012 & 13, you can expect some fair action. Best bet is the farther North you go, the better the fishing will be due to better conditions. Look for some great catfish action on cut baits, bluegill and crappies starting in backwaters and one of my favorite May fish, the Striper are starting to bite well. I have been getting nice, big stripers fishing fast tapering, sandy shorelines by casting a white hair jig, 1/4th ounce tight to shore and bringing it back to the boat.  Some of these brutes have been over the 3lb. range and full of fight.

If your planing on heading out this weekend, bring the rain gear as showers are a possibility each day.

Good luck and enjoy the Mississippi River.
