Well, the snow storm came, dumped a bunch and now with warm temps it is all gone. River angling on the Mississippi River in Pools 11-12-13 & 14 is once again going strong. Pick your Spring locations wisely, not necessarily up by the dams and you can get into big concentrations of walleye and sauger. Simple jig/minnow rigs working best at this time. You can troll 3-way rigs if fishing deeper locations. If you do troll, work up-stream as much as possible.
As far as bait?, go with bigger minnows in the 3" size range for best results. If your getting short strikes, add a stinger hook to minnows tail.
Was out this morning, windy, but able to fish some fairly sheltered locations in pool 13 and caught some nice fish. Bright orange hair jig with white hair was a killer today. I tie these myself and have had excellent luck with these hair jigs. If you have some, give them a try in bright colors.
Good Luck and Enjoy The Old Man River!!!

GREAT RIVER FISHING CONTINUES, BUT A BUMP IN THE ACTION IS COMING!!
Greetings All:
Well, the wonderful fishing is continuing on the Mississippi River but there is a glitch coming in view. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for up to 10" of heavy, wet snow to cover the region on Thursday. If this happens, it will effect the river from Guttenberg, IA down to the Quad Cities. Right now the river waters are nice and clear but that will change dramatically if the storm does occur. If the storm is just rain it will not effect the river as much as heavy runoff from deep snow.
If you have plans to fish the river this coming weekend, you might want to call ahead or check with me at: lastcast13@yahoo.com. Lets hope Mother Nature changes her mind on the snow storm.

OPEN WATER ABOUNDS!!!!
Greetings All:
Well, with this warmer than normal weather continuing, the old Mississippi River has opened up nicely. There is a lot of available open water to fish at the present time and the fish are there. With all the open water, anglers are able to travel down river to some of the great areas where fish are currently holding. I was down river this morning checking out a few early Spring Hot spots and found the action excellent. In just two hours, boated and released over 20 nice keeper walleye and sauger. All fish were returned safely to the river to fight again. As far as tackle?, I just uses 3" plastic shad bodies tipped on a jig. With water conditions, a 1/4th ounce jig was just the ticket. Cast your offering to in water structure and use a slow, steady retrieve. Fish did not want a fast return. Slow is the way to go.
You might want to start thinking about getting that boat out of mothballs and getting ready for some "Early" Spring fishing on the old Mississippi.
Good Luck and Save A Few For Me!!!

OPEN WATER MORE COMMON DAY BY DAY!!!
Greetings All:
Well, with the mild weather we have be experiencing lately the Mississippi River is once again open quite a way down from the dams. This makes fishing those great down river spots easy once again. Lots of nice fish down river on wing dams and also sharp tapering rocky shorelines. Cast jig/minnow rigs to shore and work back into deeper water. Use a nice slow retrieve for best results.
Was out this morning and caught a very nice limit of big, chunky sauger using this method. Water in great shape right now. If you get a chance to get out, GO!!!
Finally, make sure you use nice big minnows in the 3" range and keep them lively. Fish not hitting a dead or dying minnow.
Good Luck and Enjoy the River.
